Christmas Eve

Watching Home Alone for the first time... but certainly not the last!
We always celebrate Christmas Eve with the Fortunato side of the family, and this year we rocked it as we usually do. Presents were opened, food was consumed, merriment was made, and to all a good night!

Uncle Lukas came through with the best gift of the night... watch out boys! Violet is armed!
This year we tried to do our traditional opening of the gifts - one at a time, youngest to oldest, plenty of time to ooh and ahh inbetween. Yeah, my girls are not the right age for it. It quickly spiraled into "let the girls open everything and start playing so the rest of us can take a turn!" which ended up working out fine. My mom and I combined forces to cook dinner, with most things made ahead of time, resulted in a fairly stress-free event.

Toy time.

Hello Gus.
After a decent night's sleep (Mimi was under strict instructions not to let the munchkins downstairs before 6 a.m.) we spent a low-key Christmas Eve, all culminating in our evening church service where both Matt and Lukas are taking the stage. Just have to remember to put out the cookies and carrots for Santa and his crew! Merry Christmas, everyone!

Cheeeeeese!

Breakfast antics.

Jammin.

Real jammin.

Nailed it.

Another Christmas Eve in the books!

Gimme a Break

Good Friday. A good Friday indeed. The countdown to spring break started with a bang.

Violet's school egg hunt. Look at those springtime girls!

A little treat for the teachers.

I put the phone in selfie mode... she kept asking for "more Ninnie".

Blowing kisses!

My Ninnie.

They have been really sweet together lately.

Playing in the dirt. Violet decided she was going to grow a tree.

Good thing it's bath night.

Zoo Day

It's been rough lately. I can't seem to bounce back from the time change. I'm tired all. the. time. Report cards are due this week. I had seven parent-teacher conferences Friday, with more to come this week. Conferences always make me feel like a terrible teacher. "Oh hey, your child is struggling... but since I'm supposed to be teaching them, I guess it's my fault?" Or "yeah, here are these problems and I don't really know how to fix them or I would have tried already so, see ya later!" They don't really go that way, and the parents are all super appreciative, but that's how I come away feeling. Plus we've entered the wild ride that is fourth quarter. Soccer has started up again. Every weekend between now and Jesus coming back has been booked. And now my throat hurts and there's greenish gunk coming out my nose and my right ear is killing me.

So, all that to whine about say, it was lovely to get away from it all on this beautiful afternoon and meet all the grandparents at the zoo after church. Both Grandma and Mimi have birthdays coming up this spring and they decided they wanted to celebrate by hanging out at the zoo. They even brought a whole picnic for us to enjoy. Best idea ever. The weather could not have been better (oh flipflops I've missed you!) and the girls were both really good. Annie seemed a little overwhelmed by her first visit to the zoo and all the crowds, but she liked pointing out all the animals and loved the playground. She's so funny; she could care less where I am. She has no fear and insisted on tackling the "big" slide in the playground, despite all the big kids in her way. Violet, on the other hand, must know where I am at all moments of the day. So different, these two. But the trip was a success and we will definitely have to come back again soon.

Outtakes

Well friends, when you don't get a Christmas card from me this year, just know that I tried. I really did. But these two are much better appreciated in action anyway. So enjoy! Consider this the kick-off to your Season's Greetings!

Shop 'Til You Drop

Well, this is a first!
I guess we're all still recovering from the trip to Ohio. Annie fell asleep in the car on the way to Publix, continued sleeping after I loaded her into the shopping cart, slept the entire way through the grocery store, and stayed that way until we got home! Here's hoping she enjoyed her beauty rest - it's back to the school routine in two weeks!

Those Mischieveous Elves

Snacking on the gingerbread house.

Hanging around in the kitchen.

Turning hairbows into tutus.

Having a slumber party.
We had two elves visit us this year! Penny came to our house and can't be touched, lest she lose her magic. Elfie came to Violet's school and hasn't earned her magic yet. Violet can touch her and help teach her how to be good and kind, so Elfie can earn her magic. Penny helps Elfie get into all kinds of things, although fortunately our elves don't appear to be the truly mischievous kind. Mainly they just have fun moving from place to place each day. What trouble have your elves gotten into this year?

Violet-isms

Getting a ribbon at gymnastics!

She might not be the best gymnast, but she sure does love it!
On the way  home from our last gymnastics session of the year, I had both girls with me in the car. Poor Annie had been on the go since 1 p.m., first an hour drive to therapy, an hour of torture, an hour drive back, and hour at daycare being nursed and changed and getting Violet ready, then we were off to gymnastics to watch Violet for another hour. Bless her, the girl was finally done.

We were in the car, picking up dinner before finally heading home, and the sweet baby was just wailing away. Violet leaned over, grabbed her hand and said "Don't worry, Baby Annie! God is watching you!"

Heart. Melt.

I had to write it down so I don't forget (probably one day when they are screaming at each other over borrowed clothes or broken diary locks) that once upon a time they were so sweet.

And in that spirit, here are a few other hilarious things Violet has said that I don't want to forget. Ah, they grow so fast!

movie computer = movie theater, as in, "Can we have popcorn at the movie computer today?"

fall vegetable = fall festival "I went down the big slide at the fall vegetable!"

candy corn = candy cane "Look at all the candy corns lighting up in the yard!"

whole. lide. world. = whole wide world, said with such drama, as in "Our house is the best in the whole. lide. world!" (She's also a bit obsessed with having the best whatever - best Christmas tree, best outfit, etc, in the whole. lide. world.)

And of course, there is a never-to-be-forgotten incident of Violet witnessing me nursing Annie for the first time. "Why is the baby eating Mommy?" followed up later with "Babies don't eat ice cream! Babies eat Mommies!"

Ah, love my big girl!

Our rainy, indoor 4tho f July.

These faces just crack me up. I think she inherited a wee flair for the dramatic. No idea which side of the family that came from!

Date night with Daddy.

Dressing Room Malfunction

Did I ever tell you about that time I had to be cut out of a dress?

True story.

Just as embarrassing as you imagine.

A couple weeks before the Charleston girls trip wedding extravaganza, I finally found time to sneak out and look for a new dress. I headed straight for White House|Black Market, one of my favorite places to splurge. (And by splurge, I mean - spend more than 20 bucks on something I'll never wear in every day life. I can't bring myself to shop there for real life stuff. My first graders just don't appreciate the finer things.)

The store had just opened and I was the first customer. This means I was swarmed by bored, helpful sales people who immediately began throwing their most expensive outfits at me while I rifled through the sales rack. (Because nothing says splurging like the red-lined clearance rack.) The sales women held a brief but serious skirmish over who would get my attention, and the woman who finally beat out the others was working it, loading me up with sexy heels and blingy jewelry and compliments galore. I'd disappear behind the curtain, clothe myself, fling open the drapes for the big reveal, and bask in the attention. Literally, this woman was buckling my shoes and slipping the jewels onto my wrists.

Anyway, we were having a grand old time. I tried on a few dresses I discarded immediately, picked out a winner (obviously one of the clearance dresses), and fell hard for a mod little black full-priced number that I just couldn't justify (but hating walking away from). My chirpy sales lady kept popping in with accessories and opinions, we were getting comfortable and chatty, I was on a child-free high and feeling pretty fabulous in my dress-up clothes.

I had things narrowed down pretty well by the time I got to the last contender, a strapless, black, tight little cocktail number. I knew I wasn't going to like it, but decided to give it a proper elimination round, so as not to hurt its feelings. I struggled a bit with the zipper, and had to do some major suck-in and shimmy moves to even bring myself to a decent state. I pulled and yanked until I could at least get the thing to stay up by itself, and then parted the curtain at the behest of the sales woman. We all agreed, it was a no-go.

But when I went to take off the dress, I realized we had a problem. The zipper wouldn't budge. Not down. Not up.

I started sweating. This wasn't the kind of dress I could extricate myself from easily. There was no way to wiggle it over my hips. It wasn't going over the head. This thing was skin-tight. Quickly, my sweaty fingers were struggling to even hold the zipper. By this point in the shopping trip, my hair was growing bigger by the minute (did I mention it was raining that day?) And to make matters even worse, I hadn't bothered to shower before slipping out of the house that morning. And now my sweaty, unwashed body was trapped in what was naturally the most expensive dress in the store. Awesome.

Finally, reluctantly, I stuck my head out of the curtain. "Um, I've got a bit of a wardrobe malfunction..." I stammered. The sales woman bustled over, apologizing and assuring me that zippers got stuck all the time, she knew just what to do. Of course, I apologized right back for being the dirty, sweaty, stuffed sausage that I was. But after a few moments, sales woman extraordinaire was forced to call for back-up. Now I was clinging to the door frame of the dressing room while they discussed their extrication tactics like army generals and went to work. "You grab here and I'll pull down... okay, let's try up... tighter, hold it there... nope... almost... [grunt]... [inaudible]... [probably some cursing]..." Imagine any movie scene when the southern belle is getting her corset laced tighter as she hangs onto the bed post holding her breath and you'll get the idea.

Finally one of them threw in the towel and called for scissors. At which point I apologized some more. Their reassurances felt a little more forced this time, but a least I was finally free. Which is how I ended up buying not only a new dress (with no zipper), but a pair of 120 dollar shoes (gulp!) and the snazzy accessories I'd been modeling. It's amazing what some guilt and embarrassment will make you do!

(Although I did return the shoes two days later. When I was sure the sales woman wouldn't be working.)

Violet had earned a new nickname - Stewie.

Dog Days of Summer

We've been dog sitting while the neighbors are away. Violet loves these dogs. They were rescued after being abandoned in a church parking lot and they are so sweet. In my opinion, they are the perfect size, not itty bitty annoying, but not too big scary. They don't jump up (much), don't bark (except when Matt leaves the house) and although they've managed to wake Violet up before 7 a.m. almost every morning that they've been here, we still like them. Matt has been making puppy eyes about getting pooch of our own, but in my opinion, this is the perfect scenario - we have two adorable dogs... who live next door! (It's like being a grandparent - love 'em, spoil 'em, send 'em home!)

An unintended side effect of keeping the pups has been all the accessories they come with, including this lovely crate, which Violet promptly upcycled into a playhouse for herself.

I swear she crawled in by herself.

And then brought some toys to keep herself company.

Silly girl!

Rockin' Out

My husband has a new girl friend. Her name is guitar hero. They get together every chance they can.

Luckily, he doesn't mind a third wheel.

Rock out, my lovelies.
